More about this species

East Coast Crystal Crab inhabits the deep waters of the continental slope, typically living on sandy and muddy ocean floors at depths of approximately 275 to 1,600 metres.

The species is found off eastern Australia and central Pacific Ocean, where it thrives in the cold, dark conditions of the deep sea.

Unlike shallow-water crab species, Royal Crabs spend their lives in an environment with little to no sunlight, adapting to the high pressures and low temperatures of the deep ocean.

Their distinctive colouring, robust claws and substantial body size make them one of the more visually striking deep-water crab species found in Australian waters.
