More about this species

The Australian Spanner Crab (Ranina ranina), also known as the Tiger Crab, lives on sandy ocean floors along Australia’s eastern coastline, predominantly off Queensland and northern New South Wales. It is commonly found at depths of 10–100 metres, favouring warm tropical and subtropical waters.

Unlike many other crab species, the Tiger Crab spends much of its life buried beneath the sand, using its specially adapted legs to quickly burrow into the seabed for protection from predators and to ambush prey. It emerges to feed on small crustaceans, molluscs and other marine organisms.

In Australia, Spanner Crabs are commercially harvested primarily off the coasts of Queensland and New South Wales, where the sandy seabeds provide ideal conditions for this unique species.
